Description:
Sport Pilots were historically limited to 1320# and 120K planes outside radio-controlled airspace (without added endorsements). With MOSAIC, Sport Pilots can now fly most of the GA piston fleet. The Sport Pilot ACS does not include flight into radio-controlled airspace or comm, X-C weather and planning, night operations, or emergency instrument control. These and other training and endorsements need to be added by a knowledgeable CFI (What is a Vh endorsement?).
We will discuss the new Sport Pilot regulations and examine the draft version of AC 61-146 (Sport Pilot guidance) as well as attempt to answer all your questions (everyone is still a little confused). A critical starting point is understanding that Sport Planes and Sport Pilots now have different limitations (some sport planes cannot be flown by sport pilots!) The rules for new sport plane certification will not be out until next July.
